Calibrated Tampers

Calibrated tampers save you money very quickly.

Calibrated tampers compress your grounds and “click” when you reach the ideal 30 lbs pressure for a perfect espresso shot. We’ve seen baristas at trade shows almost climb on top of their tampers to compress the grounds. When we pointed out they were probably using between 60 ~ 80 lbs. pressure, they insisted they were only using 30 lbs. … “OK” ….

The bottom line is you need to have consistency to pull perfect shots, and there are three factors tht influence your shots. They are:

  1. Weight, or quantity of beans used in the shot (16 ~ 18 grams is ideal)
  2. How fine the grind
  3. Tamping pressure

If you are using a constant quantity of beans (let’s say 18 grams) and your grind is set to a fine espresso grind, you want your tamping pressure to be consistent also, but the reality is if your tamping pressure is all over the map (25 lbs. on one shot, 40 lbs. the next), your shots are going to vary from 15 seconds to 35 seconds and you’re going to be wasting a lot of coffee. A calibrated tamper is much cheaper in the long run.

Our Calibrated Tampers have a convex base to match the curve of the filter basket inside the portafilter and are available in the following sizes:

53mm - Black handle

57mm - Red handle

58mm - Black handle         $99.95 each
